Is painting cabinets worth it?
If the boxes and doors are solid wood or MDF in good shape, yes: professionally prepped and sprayed or fine-rolled cabinet paint holds up well and costs far less than replacement. Worn boxes or peeling thermofoil doors are better refaced or replaced.
How disruptive is a kitchen update?
Update-level work (paint, backsplash, hardware, lighting) keeps your kitchen usable most evenings. Counter swaps lose the sink for a day or two. Full renovations mean weeks of takeout, and we say so up front.
What should I update first on a budget?
Lighting, then hardware, then paint. Good under-cabinet lighting and current pulls change how a kitchen feels for the least money, and neither locks you out of bigger changes later.
